As the world takes strides towards a technological world, we tend to forget the simple pleasures in life. Sometimes, we just need to turn off our phones and computers.
When you are on a date please just turn your phone off. That person is taking their precious time to be with you and why not respect that. Turn your phone off and show how much you care for them and want to be with them. For me, I find it disrespectful when someone is talking to you then suddenly you start texting, as they are talking. I usually just leave my phone on vibrate or silent. If my phone vibrates in my pocket when I am talking to someone, I just ignore it until I am completely done talking to someone. I want to give my full attention when I see and talk to someone, which brings up my next point.
If you can even if it's for a little time, go see your friends. Don't just text them or send them a message on a social network. It means a lot to a person when you take the time to visit them. So if you have free time go see a friend. Take advantage of this.
Instead of watching TV all day or sitting on your computer, go outside...
...Go for a walk, run a few miles, walk your dog, take your child to the park, etc. In simplest terms, enjoy the great weather outside. In my hometown, good weather only exists for about six months of the year. I want to be out as much as I can when possible. But the biggest thing is I leave my phone at home or in my car. Personally, I love having picnic lunches or a bonfire with my closest friends. There's nothing like conversations in person rather than online conversations.
Sometimes, we just need to read a good book. Even reading the newspaper is great. As long as you are reading fine print rather than HTML text, that's fine. I feel like our world has become too dependent on the internet that they forget the resources around them. We survived for hundreds of years without the internet and we still can. It's scary to see how many people rely on Sparknotes for plot rather than reading book itself. There's no better feeling than finishing a book and this is coming from a math/science person. Sometimes we just need to put our laptop aside and enjoy what literature has to offer.
Don't get me wrong, I love the internet. Every day, I check my Yahoo email, Facebook account, Weather, and running results on Dyestat. But I try to only check for a few minutes then move on with my life. Enjoy what life has to offer. Instead of watching Youtube videos all day alone, go make a video with your friends at the local park. My best example for my article doesn't involve me. Every season of sports at my local high school, gives an award for highest unweighted G.P.A. The male and female winners were two of my best friends. Yet, they also had another similarity. I asked both of them once how much time they spend on their computer per week. They responded both one to two hours at most per week. That goes to show instead of using their time online, they used their time wisely and for more productive reasons.
Well, I am going to keep true to my article. When I am done checking my email, I am going to play Frisbee outside with my roommate and leave all my electronic devices in my room.
